The Certification
Accreditation Board (CAB) of Georgia was incorporated as a non-profit organization
in 1970. Its general purpose was, and remains, to promote and encourage
constructive cooperation among all persons, organizations, and
agencies involved in the design, specification, production, construction,
and testing of concrete.
Participating organizations are:
- Georgia Association of American Institute of Architects
- Georgia Branch, Associated General Contractors
- Georgia Concrete & Products Association, Inc.
- Atlanta, Chapter, Construction Specifications Institute
- Consulting Engineers Council of Georgia, Inc.
- Independent Testing Laboratory Representatives
- Georgia Chapter, American Concrete Institute
- Structural Engineers Association of Georgia
In the 1960’s, the CAB prepared and promulgated the Standard
Minimum Specifications for Ready Mixed Concrete, the forerunner
of ACI 301 Standard Specifications for Structural Concrete. This
was revised in 1979 and again in 1987 to reflect updated ACI
codes and specifications. In 1996 a decision was made to not
update the CAB specification further, but to recommend use of
current applicable ACI codes and specifications.
Also early in its history the CAB instituted a program of Certification
of Concrete Field Technicians. As the American Concrete Institute
became more involved in certification and as ASTM standards increasingly
required ACI certification or equal (as in ASTM C 39, C 78, C
94, C 685 and C 1077), CAB became the local sponsoring group
for ACI certification programs.
In 1992, after ASTM standards began requiring the inspection
or accreditation of concrete testing laboratories, CAB initiated
a program of Concrete Laboratory Inspection and Accreditation
for conformance to the requirements of ASTM C 1077 Standard Practices
for Laboratories Testing Concrete and Concrete Aggregates for
Use in Construction and Criteria for Laboratory Evaluation.
Through the years, CAB’s education, certification and
accreditation programs have improved and expanded. These efforts
by CAB and its participating organizations have enhanced the
quality of concrete construction in Georgia, benefiting the owners
of concrete projects and the public in general.
As the local sponsoring group for American Concrete Institute
certification programs for Georgia, CAB currently conducts examinations
for five ACI certification programs.
CAB offers training in the form of workshops for those seeking
certification.
ACI self-study materials, relative to each of the certification
programs, are available for purchase through CAB. Videos and
other visual aid training materials are available for loan and
purchase from CAB.
