As of January 1, 2008, ACI is excited to announce that newly-retooled ACI Laboratory Testing Technician certification programs. This realignment is the result of several years of work by ACI Committee C 620, Laboratory Technician Certification, to reduce content overlap between each program, reduce the number of test methods covered by each program, place the test methods into more logical groupings, and address the differences between referenced ASTM and AASHTO standards in selected programs.

DEFINITION:

Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician - Level 2  is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of basic laboratory procedures for aggregates and concrete.

The program requires a working knowledge of the following ACI and ASTM Standards:

• ACI 214* Evaluation of Strength Test Results of Concrete
• ACI 211.1* Selecting Proportions for Concrete
• C 192 Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Laboratory [This standard also requires the knowledge and ability to perform ASTM C 143 (Slump), C 173 and C 231 (Air Content), C 138 (Unit Weight), and C 1064 (Temperature)
• C 470* Molds for Forming Concrete Test Cylinders Vertically
• C 496* Splitting Tensile Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
• C 42* Obtaining and Testing Drilled Cores and Sawed Beams

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet all of the following requirements:

• Have at least one year (2000 hours) approved work experience or a combination of work experience and education

• Hold current certification as ACI Concrete Laboratory Testing Technician – Level I
• Obtain a passing grade on the ACI written examination and
• Successfully complete the ACI performance examination.

• 2-hour open book written examination
• 75 multiple-choice questions There are between 8 and 12 questions on each of the Standards
• Passing grade - 70% overall with no grade below 60% on each standard

• Closed book
• Requires actual demonstration of the required ASTM Standard.
• Examinee is judged on his/her ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard.
• Recertification is necessary every 5 years, and requires successful completion of both written and performance examinations.
