A Concrete Strength Testing Technician is an individual who has demonstrated the knowledge and ability to properly perform, record, and report the results of four basic ASTM laboratory procedures related to the determination of concrete compressive and flexural strength.

Certification as an ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician is:

• for those technicians whose primary assignment is the capping and breaking of concrete compressive test cylinders and of flexural strength specimens.
• No prerequisite work experience or education
• Certification is valid for 6* years

*Certifications initiated prior to January 1, 2008. Individuals initiating the certification process January 1, 2008 and later will be eligible for five (5) year certifications.

The ASTM standards covered on the written and performance examinations for this certification are:

• C 39 - Compressive Strength of Concrete
• C 78 - Flexural Strength of Concrete
• C 617 - Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens
• C 1231 - Use of Unbonded Caps
  

(Either or both C 617 and C 1231 methods of capping may be demonstrated in the performance examination).

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

ACI will grant certification only to those applicants who meet both of the following requirements:

• A passing grade on the ACI written examination; and

• Successful completion of the ACI performance examination.

WRITTEN EXAM:

To pass the written examination, both of the following conditions must be met: (a) at least 60% correct for each of the required standards; and (b) a minimum score of 70% overall.

• 1-hour closed book exam
• 40 multiple-choice questions - at least 8 questions on each of the 5 ASTM standards.
• 70% passing grade on the overall examination, with at least 60% correct for each of the required standards for certification.

PERFORMANCE EXAM:

• Closed book
• Actual demonstration of the required ASTM Standards

Examinees are judged on their ability to correctly perform or describe all of the required procedures for each standard. Failure of any one of the required ASTM standards will require re-examination on all of the standards.
